DALRAIDA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Dalraida Elementary was opened in September of 1954.  Mrs. Elizabeth McFaden was its first principal.  There were 366 pupils enrolled with 10 teachers.  The next year the student population had grown to 602 students and 16 teachers.  The original building was designed by Sherlock, Smith and Adams, architects and was built on a 9 acre plot on Dalraida Road.  There were 17 classrooms, a music room, auditorium/cafeteria and 12 toilets!  The school served students from Arlington Heights, Forest Hills, Dalraida, Rosemont Heights, Sherwood and Wareingwood.

In 1998, construction began on the annex which would house grades 3 through 6.  It also included two rotundas and a computer lab.  There were student bathrooms on each wing and faculty restrooms off of each rotunda.  The addition of the new annex building allowed us to say good-bye to the Dalraida Village-a group of portable classrooms that had housed grades 4-6 and specialists for several years.  The building was completed and occupied by students in January of 1999, just in time for a small tornado to pass through the neighborhood.  The new "tornado safe" building proved itself and the only damage was to the metal awnings that connected it to the older building.

In 2008, Dalraida began another construction project that would bring our school to where it is today. The entire old building was gutted and the cafeteria was demolished.  A new cafeteria, office suite, media center and music room was built.  Every new classroom is equipped with the latest in technology and SmartBoards now hang on the walls where just a few short years ago, teachers wrote assignments in chalk on old slate blackboards.  The new building also houses a new computer lab and science lab as well as a conference room and waiting area.  Our 630 students started the 2010-2011 school year in their new building!

The school sure looks different than it did back in 1954, but some things have not changed...Dalraida Elementary School is still the pride of the neighborhood, its teachers and staff are still committed to providing the highest quality education for its students, and we still have the greatest group of students and faculty in the city of Montgomery!
